COMPRESSIONI UNPRECEDENTED OBJECT
COMPRESSIONI UNPRECEDENTED OBJECT
Designed by Paolo Ulian
With his Compressioni project, Paolo Ulian has conceived a new way of forming sheet metal, a method that reveals uncanny expressivity
Composed of a basket, a centrepiece and an "unprecedented object", his triad of objects is a powerful encapsulation of the experiments he entertained with a master turner at his side.
The three containers are first made on a lathe, then compressed to obtain the final shape. Trial after trial, it became clear that the deformations caused by crushing the semifinished articles were relatively controllable variables.
The folds created on the bottom of the objects were almost magically arranged in geometric patterns – squares, pentagons, hexagons and octagons – giving fascinating regularity to the elements' unique differences.
DESIGNER
PAOLO ULIAN
He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara and at the Isia in Florence. In 1990 he worked as an assistant in Enzo Mari's studio.
In 2000 he exhibited at the Salone Satellite where he won the first prize of the Design Report Award.
In 2009, Beppe Finessi curated his first solo exhibition at the Fabbrica del Vapore and the following year a second personal exhibition was set up at the Milan Triennale entitled "Between play and dump" curated by Enzo Mari.
In 2013 he was invited to design a special installation dedicated to Vico Magistretti within the sixth edition of the Triennale Design Museum. He has collaborated with Droog Design and with Italian companies such as Driade, Fontana Arte, Danese, Zani & Zani, Azzurra Ceramiche, Up Group, Zava Luce and Antonio Lupi.
In 2020 he plan the set-up design of the latest anthological exhibition by Enzo Mari at the Milan Triennale. Some of his projects have entered the permanent collection of the Triennale Design Museum, the London Design Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.

Il Tornitore Matto
Il Tornitore Matto is the brainchild of Alberto Alessi. Developed in collaboration with Giulio Iacchetti, it is the start of a new experimental design brand.
Rooted in the manufacturing origins of the Alessi company, the initiative is an offshoot, a collection of objects that meld design, industry and craftwork. The stimuli behind this enterprise are many, but two of them stand out.
One is the decorative arts movement Wiener Werkstätte, whose approach has been a constant reference for Alberto Alessi throughout the years. Founded in 1903, the “Viennese Workshop” involved many of the most talented artists of that period.
Working side by side with craftspeople, they created exquisitely refined artifacts. The second main stimulus behind Il Tornitore Matto is Alice in Wonderland, a world where rules are wacky. This connects to the project’s freedom from the typical limits of industrial production to give free rein to human creativity.
Nine designers including Iacchetti participated in this first chapter of the manufacturing adventure whose aim is poetic techne. Each piece of the collection is marked with the production year and a sequential number.
