FRIENDS TABLE MIRRORS

Designed By Stephen Burks

The Friends table mirrors, part of a new collaboration between Salvatori and the acclaimed American artist Stephen Burks, are particularly striking for their heightened expressivity.

The designer made liberal use of the extraordinary colours of Salvatori’s natural stones to bring to life the diversity of the faces of the world through materials such as Nero Marquinia, Rosso Francia, Giallo Siena, Verde Guatemala, Emperador Dark and Silk Georgette®.

Available in a round version on a tilting frame and oval model on a fixed base, the mirrors reveal an immediate connection to the artist’s roots and showcase his talent for blending ancient primitive traditions with a contemporary aesthetic.

Salvatori Friends Table Mirrors

“I imagined all of the different faces from all around the world and tried to bring them together as a kind of hybrid of my imagination through the mixing of the colored marble on the reflective surfaces.”

DESIGNER

STEPHEN BURKS

He then went on to study at the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning at Columbia University in New York.

He has worked closely with artisans and artists in over ten countries and six continents as product development consultant, both in an independent capacity and in association with non-profit bodies including Aid To Artisans, the Nature Conservancy and the Foundation, creating sustainable products to support local craftspeople.

His origins are reflected in his work, and he has always been a fierce proponent of African American civil rights. He believes in a pluralistic vision of design that is inclusive of all cultural perspectives.

He hosts design workshops and has been appointed as a critic in a number of design schools in various parts of the world. His studio, named Stephen Burks Man Made, designs store interiors, events, packaging, consumer products, lighting, furniture and home accessories.

Together with his team, he has been commissioned by many of the world’s leading design-driven brands to develop collections that engage hand production as a strategy for innovation, including Dedon, Luceplan and Missoni.

His work has been exhibited internationally and awards include the Illinois Institute of Technology Alumni Personal Achievement Award, Brooklyn Museum Young Modernist Award, the Architektur & Wohnen Audio Mentor Prize and the 2008 United States Artists, Architecture & Design Target Fellowship Grant.

He is the only African American to have won the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Product Design.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

Salvatori Friends Table Mirrors

WOOD

-Avoid using detergents on wood and always dry it carefully after cleaning to prevent streaks or patches forming.
-Remember that wood is a natural material and can be delicate and photosensitive. Exposure to light, heat or damp may cause slight discolouration or minor adjustments in size, but this is entirely normal and shouldn’t be considered a defect.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

-All our finished products leave our Tuscan premises pre-sealed. Since we do not like to paint the surface of our lovely stones with transparent paints or resins, we apply three coats of the highest possible level of protective sealant. This helps to preserve the product without compromising the wonderful natural look and feel of the stone. -That said, please bear in mind that there is no sealer on the market that can make natural stone 100% stain proof, especially if you leave the staining agent on it for a prolonged period. The sealant acts as a temporary barrier that allows you to have a few hours between the moment a staining substance (for example, wine or coffee) comes into contact with the stone and the moment you wipe it off. The important thing is to act quickly before a substance is absorbed into the stone, as that is when it causes staining. -Please DO NOT use cleaners containing abrasive cleansers, ammonia, bleach, acid or even those “homemade remedies” made from lemon, vinegar and the like. -If you are a particularly assiduous cleaner or you have difficulty removing a mark, you can use specialist stone cleaning products and, if to set your mind at rest you can periodically apply a new coat of sealant. For cleaning stone, wood and metal, simply use a soft cloth with water or a neutral detergent.
