Maison Matisse Sol Bottle
SOL BOTTLE
SOL BOTTLE
Designed by Marta Bakowski
For its first permanent collection, Maison Matisse has teamed up with Franco-Polish designer Marta Bakowski to create a series of 14 ceramic pieces.
The Sol bottle, entirely hand painted is part of a desire to create a set of tableware objects inspired by Henri Matisse’s painting La Musique (1939).
Given current environmental concerns, where the use of plastic has fallen increasingly out of favor in our consumer habits, the use of pitchers or earthenware carafes becomes a simple way to serve water and wine, according to your desires.
DESIGNER
MARTA BAKOWSKI
Maison Matisse invited the young designer Marta Bakowski to create its first permanent collection inspired by the painting La Musique (1939).
The Franco-Polish designer took the palette of colors and brilliantly reinterpreted the most representative themes of Henri Matisse's work, such as the philodendron leaf, the figure of the woman and music.
Born in Paris in 1986, Marta Bakowski studied design at Central Saint Martins College before completing her degree with the Royal College of Arts. Two years spent alongside Hella Jongerius capped off her training, leading the young designer to establish her own studio in 2013 in Paris.
Her collaborations include: La Chance, Ligne Roset as well as Roche Bobois.
For Maison Matisse, Marta Bakowski imagines in 2020 a collection entitled La Musique, inspired by the eponymous painting by Henri Matisse in 1939, composed of ceramic tableware pieces hand painted in Italy.
Plates, dishes, carafes, jugs, so many pieces with a strong character, taking up the iconic symbols of the painter's work: the philodendron leaf, the face and silhouette of a woman, the grid, etc.

INSPIRATION
Inspired by Henri Matisse's painting "La Musique" in 1939, the Sol bottle uses pictorial features from the masterpiece. Its symbolic shape reflects the curves of the guitar in the painting. Its decorative design is a reinterpretation of the shapes and motifs painted by Henri Matisse.
ARTS AND MATERIALS
QUALITY
IThe Sol bottle was born in an Italian workshop operating in Tuscany since 1921. It is among the last in Europe to possess such noble and sought-after ancestral know-how.
This piece is the fruit of a manual trade that has ensured quality craftsmanship for decades, and will continue to do so in the years to come.
The meticulous process used to design it embodies all its richness and translates its intrinsic value; it leaves behind traces of the hand strokes that transform any object into a unique piece.
The choice of material is an important part of the process. This is the element that provides a particular tactile aspect to objects; it determines their language. By applying a decoration and colors, the material’s surface will become smooth or textured; it will make the decoration come to life.
Like a skin, the material shapes the silhouette of the object, and through its texture, it provides character. It is undoubtedly the combination of bright colors with the matte enamel of the earthenware that gives our Sol bottle its uniquely warm intensity. Its round and generous shapes call for gaiety and getting together, and always with music.
