AUBE CENTERPIECE

AUBE CENTERPIECE

Designed By Formafantasma

The Aube centerpiece is inspired by Henri Matisse's painting Les Mille et Une Nuits (1950), and is the latest addition to our collection of the same name.

Designed by the Italian design duo Formafantasma, Aube is a piece with a strong character, designed to meet different needs: basket, pocket or serving dish, all different uses that make it a piece of choice.

Placed in the center of a table, our Aube basket will bring a touch of bright and cheerful color to your decoration, giving it a unique atmosphere.

The Aube centerpiece is an invitation to revisit Henri Matisse's paper cut-out theme, folding metal like paper.

Aube is available in six colors worked like solid colors, all taken from the palette of the painting Les Mille et Une Nuits (1950).

FORMAFANTASMA

Formafantasma is a research-based design studio investigating the ecological, historical, political and social forces shaping the discipline of design today.

Since founding the studio in 2009, Italians Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin have championed the need for value – laden advocacy merged with holistic design thinking.

Their aim is to facilitate a deeper understanding of both our natural and built environments and to propose transformative interventions through design and its material, technical, social, and discursive possibilities.

Working from their studio in Milan (Italy) and Rotterdam (The Netherlands), the practice embraces a broad spectrum of typologies and methods, from product design through spatial design, strategic planning and design consultancy.

Whether designing to a client's brief or developing self – initiated projects, the studio applies the same rigorous attention to context, process and detail. As a result, Formafantasma's entire portfolio is characterised by a coherent visual language and meticulously researched outcomes.

For Formafantasma, this crossflow of knowledge and experience taken from both their commercial contracts and their more autonomous projects has benefitted and informed the respective other. It has also given them a unique perspective of the design industry, allowing them to acknowledge the legacy of industrial production as the fundamental source for the designer's expertise and agency in contemporary society while also addressing its historic contribution to environmental instability.

In 2022, the Italian design duo teamed up with Maison Matisse to celebrate one of the major themes in Henri Matisse's work - paper cut-outs - by creating a series of limited edition lighting fixtures called Fold.

ARTS AND MATERIALS

- The Aube centerpiece is made from steel, using a precise and innovative process that is uncommon for small decorative pieces.
- The material is first laser-cut from steel plate, then bent, polished and cleaned to ensure a smooth finish, without roughness.
- The piece is then spray-painted with a special paint that does not cover the grain of the steel, but keeps the original feel.

INSPIRATION

Formafantasma's intention here is to pay homage to the work of Henri Matisse, by studying his creative process rather than his aesthetic language.

From this research has emerged an original set of pieces, which are intended to be a testimony to the painter's legacy. Adopting this intuitive creative process and interpreting it in their design process, Formafantasma have developed a series of abstract forms, cutting and folding paper, similar to what Matisse did at the end of his Work.
