Maison Matisse Aube Candle Holder Blue
AUBE CANDLE HOLDER BLUE
AUBE CANDLE HOLDER BLUE
Designed by Formafantasma
The Aube candleholder is part of Les Mille et Une Nuits collection, inspired by Henri Matisse's painting of the same name (1950), for which the Italian design duo Formafantasma have designed two pieces : a candleholder and a centerpiece.
Now a staple in our interiors, the candle holder is the ideal accessory to bring character to any decor. Here, the Aube candle holder wishes to revisit the theme of Henri Matisse's cut-outs, by folding the metal like paper.
DESIGNER
FORMAFANTASMA
Formafantasma is a research-based design studio investigating the ecological, historical, political and social forces shaping the discipline of design today.
Since founding the studio in 2009, Italians Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin have championed the need for value – laden advocacy merged with holistic design thinking.
Their aim is to facilitate a deeper understanding of both our natural and built environments and to propose transformative interventions through design and its material, technical, social, and discursive possibilities.
Working from their studio in Milan (Italy) and Rotterdam (The Netherlands), the practice embraces a broad spectrum of typologies and methods, from product design through spatial design, strategic planning and design consultancy.
Whether designing to a client's brief or developing self – initiated projects, the studio applies the same rigorous attention to context, process and detail. As a result, Formafantasma's entire portfolio is characterised by a coherent visual language and meticulously researched outcomes.
For Formafantasma, this crossflow of knowledge and experience taken from both their commercial contracts and their more autonomous projects has benefitted and informed the respective other.
It has also given them a unique perspective of the design industry, allowing them to acknowledge the legacy of industrial production as the fundamental source for the designer's expertise and agency in contemporary society while also addressing its historic contribution to environmental instability.
In 2022, the Italian design duo teamed up with Maison Matisse to celebrate one of the major themes in Henri Matisse's work - paper cut-outs - by creating a series of limited edition lighting fixtures called Fold.

MAINTENANCE ADVICE
Clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth. The use of abrasive products is strongly discouraged. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may alter the color of the parts.
INSPIRATION
Formafantasma's intention here is to pay homage to the work of Henri Matisse, by studying his creative process rather than his aesthetic language. From this research has emerged an original set of pieces, which are intended to be a testimony to the painter's legacy. Adopting this intuitive creative process and interpreting it in their design process, Formafantasma have developed a series of abstract forms, cutting and folding paper, similar to what Matisse did at the end of his Work.
ART AND MATERIALS
The Aube candleholder is made of steel, and aluminum for the ring that will hold the candle.
Its manufacture requires a meticulous know-how, fruit of the innovation, as well as machines not usual for small objects of decoration.
From steel plates, the material is laser cut, then folded, polished and cleaned to obtain the smoothest possible aspect. Finally, the piece is spray-painted with a paint that does not cover the grain of the steel, but keeps the texture interesting. The aluminum ring requires the use of a 3D machine with mechanical arms.
