THE VILLAGE | HOUSE OF STONE

Designed By John Pawson

The starting point for The Village collection of sculptures is an exploration of the concept of home as more than a physical structure, but a kind of haven, an idea that became evident during the tumultuous months of 2020 when we found ourselves spending more time among our four walls than ever before.

The result is an eclectic, extraordinarily modern-day series of tiny houses, with their very diversity creating a distinct and accurate echo of the global community we inhabit. Among the contributions that make up this fascinating village is House of Stone by John Pawson, the father of minimalist architecture

Created from a single block of gorgeous dark brown Pietra d’Avola, one of our most beloved stones, House of Stone epitomises the pared-back linear approach that its designer is revered for. Deceptively simple with its shape that recalls the typical house drawn by young children, the design plays with solids and voids, with the narrow slits along the roof welcoming in the light.

Creating a sense of welcome and belonging, all superfluous elements are stripped to a bare essence. House of Stone is also a reinterpretation of an earlier collaboration between Salvatori and John Pawson: The House of Stone, a full-size installation for the 2010 Milan Design Fair.

The talking point of Design Week, its iconic form and daring architecture captured the hearts and minds of all who saw it. The miniature version, just small enough to sit in the palm of your hand, is destined to cast a similar spell.

A special piece on its own, it sits perfectly alongside the other sculptures that make up The Village, and is a perfect gift idea for any aficionado of architecture and design. “When I set out to design a building, my aim is to create spaces where people will feel comfortable and at home”

DESIGNER

JOHN PAWSON

Internationally-renowned British architect John Pawson is widely considered the father of minimalist architecture. We have worked with him a number of times since our first project together in 2009, the iconic House of Stone.

United by a passion for challenging conventional norms to create functional, beautiful design, we have together developed contemporary products for the home including the Ellipse homeware range and Span collection of indoor and outdoor furniture.

In 2021 he contributed to The Village, our special project that explores the concept of home, reinterpreting it in a collection of miniature houses in natural stone that are each a design accessory in their own right, but together represent the global village we inhabit today.

John Pawson CBE has spent over thirty years making rigorously simple architecture that speaks of the fundamentals but is also modest in character.

His body of work spans a broad range of scales and typologies, from private houses, sacred commissions, galleries, museums, hotels, ballet sets, yacht interiors and a bridge across a lake. Pawson’s work.

As Alvar Aalto’s bronze door handle has been characterised as the ‘handshake of a building’, so a sense of engaging with the essence of a philosophy of space through everything the eye sees or the hand touches is a defining aspect of His method is to approach buildings and design commissions in precisely the same manner, on the basis that ‘it’s all architecture’.

Whether at the scale of a monastery, a house, a saucepan or a ballet, everything is traceable back to a consistent set of preoccupations with mass, volume, surface, proportion, junction, geometry, repetition, light and ritual. In this way, even something as modest as a fork can become a vehicle for much broader ideas about how we live and what we value.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

- All our finished products leave our Tuscan premises pre-sealed. Since we do not like to paint the surface of our   lovely stones with transparent paints or resins, we apply three coats of the highest possible level of protective   sealant.
-This helps to preserve the product without compromising the wonderful natural look and feel of the stone.
That said, please bear in mind that there is no sealer on the market that can make natural stone 100% stain proof, especially if you leave the staining agent on it for a prolonged period.
- The sealant acts as a temporary barrier that allows you to have a few hours between the moment a staining substance (for example, wine or coffee) comes into contact with the stone and the moment you wipe it off.
- The important thing is to act quickly before a substance is absorbed into the stone, as that is when it causes staining.
- Please DO NOT use cleaners containing abrasive cleansers, ammonia, bleach, acid or even those “homemade remedies” made from lemon, vinegar and the like.
- If you are a particularly assiduous cleaner or you have difficulty removing a mark, you can use specialist stone cleaning products and, if to set your mind at rest you can periodically apply a new coat of sealant.
For cleaning stone, wood and metal, simply use a soft cloth with water or a neutral detergent.
