ECHO RUGS

Designed By Jos Klarenbeek

The Echo rug is a handwoven flat weave crafted from 100% pure New Zealand wool.

It is designed by Joss Klarenbeek, whose mathematical background lends it a distinctive look and feel.

The rug is meticulously handwoven by skilled artisans using an 8-shaft threading repeat, incorporating about 150 single warp threads and 40 single weft threads.

This weaving technique results in a rhythmic "echo" effect that skilfully balances structure and pattern.

Both the warp and weft consist of bundles of three fine two-ply New Zealand woollen yarns alternated with thicker felted New Zealand woollen yarns, creating a tactile and visually appealing texture.

As Klarenbeek explains, “The Echo rug is a result of years of experimentation with the “network threading technique and its belonging binding patterns, applied in a dual system of a thicker and thinner yarn in both weft and warp.” Combined with the yarn selection this technique results in a rug that beautifully combines mathematical precision and craftsmanship.

JOS KLARENBEEK

Jos Klarenbeek is an independent designer and researcher whose work explores the intersection of mathematics, science and design. Both through personal projects and commissioned work, his approach brings the precision of a mathematical mind together with a focus on materials and craftsmanship, resulting in designs that convey intricate stories and complex narratives rooted in data.

Jos embraces an interdisciplinary approach, seeking to connect various fields and offer a fresh perspective on data visualisation. In recent years, his work has prominently featured textiles and weaving, in which woven textiles are viewed as binary matrices composed of ones and zeros.

With degrees in both mathematics and design, from the University of Amsterdam and the Design Academy Eindhoven respectively, Jos work builds on a strong foundation. His skills in programming, 3D modelling, technical weaving, and product development all further inform his practice as does his work as an educator: Jos teaches technical jacquard weaving at the Royal Academy of the Arts in The Hague.

Recognised with several awards, including the Dutch Design Award among others, Jos’s independent research has also found its place in museums and publications. Notable exhibitions and projects include Hack the Heritage, Solid Flow, Kadans 2.0, and Fibres Unsorted at Salone del Mobile.

CHARACTERISTICS

- Rug underlay recommended
- Round or odd shape not possible
- Slight colour differences may occur
- Irregularities may occur as a result of the hand woven process

PERFORMANCE

FIRE TESTS

- N 13501-1 Bfl-s1 • ASTM D 2859/CPSC FF 1-70/FF 2-70, 16 CFR 1630 • ASTM E 648 Class 1 -There are differing requirements concerning the flame-retardancy of textiles dependent on the area of application, country or even region. Our textiles pass the majority of international standards and are also tested for a selection of regional requirements.

TRAFFIC

-Suitable for medium to heavy residential and commercial use with exceptions of stairways, corridors or with the use of castors. -A steel tumbler with rubber studs rolls freely in a rotating drum and wears the surface of the test samples inside of the drum. After 5.000 and 20.000 turns the sample is examined and rated by five inspectors based on the changes in its surface structure and colour. -Rugs that meet the minimum requirements of the test are rated from 21 (worst) to 23 (best) for residential use and 31 (worst) to 33 (best) for residential and commercial use.

LIGHTFASTNESS

-4-6 (ISO 1-8) -ISO 105-B02 -Lightfastness relates to the ability of a textile to retain its colour under light. When testing for lightfastness, samples are exposed to artificial daylight for a specified period. -The evaluation scale ranges from 1 (worst) to 8 (best). An increase of one point corresponds to a doubling of the lightfastness, i.e. the same fading takes twice as long.

CARE

CARE INSTRUCTIONS RUGS

Regular cleaning is important in order to keep the rug looking its best and to prolong its life. Dust and dirt wear down the rug and also reduce its fire-retardant properties.

BAMBOO VISCOSE

Do not walk on or rub a wet bamboo viscose rug, as this will damage the structure of the yarn. It will take a few days for a bamboo rug to fully dry.

SILK RUGS

Every stain, including plain water, should only be treated with soda water. Vinegar or tap water should never be used.

STAIN REMOVAL

Remove stains immediately. Place a clean, wet cotton cloth and leave it on the stain until it has absorbed it. If needed, dab the stain by working from the edge of the stain inwards. Do not rub to remove the stain.

REGULAR CARE

-Kvadrat rugs are made with care to last. To make sure your rug maintains its vitality and character over a long lifetime, it helps to take good care of it. -We recommend vacuum cleaning your rug at least once a week using a vacuum cleaner set to medium power without applying a brush. Always vacuum in the direction of the pile. Please also rotate the rug frequently to prevent wear and fading in the same place. -Ideally, the humidity in the room where the rug is located should be around 50%. If humidity falls below 40%, we recommend spraying your rug with water to avoid the yarn to become dry and brittle.
