Like all the pieces in the La Musique collection, the Harmonie bottle is intended for multiple and varied uses and is not limited to the role of a simple bottle.

The La Musique collection comprises three hand-painted bottles in bright and cheerful colors: the Harmonie bottle , the Canon bottle , and the Sol bottle . All the tableware pieces are food-safe.

DESIGNER

ALESSANDRO MENDINI

Maison Matisse invited the young designer Marta Bakowski to create its first permanent collection.

The young Franco-Polish designer extracted the color palette from the painting La Musique (1939) and brilliantly reinterpreted the most representative themes of Henri Matisse's work, such as the philodendron leaf, the figure of a woman, and music.

Born in Paris in 1986, Marta Bakowski studied design at Central Saint Martins College before completing her degree with the Royal College of Arts. Two years spent alongside Hella Jongerius capped off her training, leading the young designer to establish her own studio in 2013 in Paris.

Her collaborations include: La Chance, Ligne Roset as well as Roche Bobois. For Maison Matisse, Marta Bakowski imagines in 2020 a collection entitled La Musique, inspired by the eponymous painting by Henri Matisse in 1939, composed of ceramic tableware pieces hand painted in Italy.

Plates, dishes, carafes, jugs, so many pieces with a strong character, taking up the iconic symbols of the painter's work: the philodendron leaf, the face and silhouette of a woman, the grid, etc.

INSPIRATION

Inspired by Henri Matisse's painting "Music" from 1939, the Harmonie bottle adopts the pictorial codes of the canvas. Its symbolic shape echoes the curves of the guitar in the painting. The exercise of translating a painted work into a functional object allowed Marta Bakowski to move from the flatness and lack of perspective characteristic of Matisse to three-dimensionality: an object that can be walked around, that can be grasped.

MAINTENANCE ADVICE

ART AND MATTER

The Harmonie bottle was crafted in a family-run workshop in Tuscany, Italy, continuing a ceramic tradition that dates back to the early 1920s. The artisans who worked on this piece were dedicated to utilizing the exceptional expertise passed down through generations.

The decoration is hand-painted by a master decorator onto a slip-cast bisque, giving it its characteristic curved and generous shape.

The bisque is then fired twice to permanently fix the colors to the matte glaze. Vibrant colors and a final matte finish are the hallmarks of this artisanal feat, lending the Harmonie bottle its unique and timeless character.
